Amaka Offiah is Professor of Paediatric Musculoskeletal Imaging and currently Chair of the BAME Staff Network and Departmental Director of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Sheffield.

Her research relates to the radiological diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias and in differentiating accidental from inflicted (abusive) injury in children. Amaka has published over 190 research papers, guidelines, textbooks, and book chapters and given over 200 invited international and national lectures. She is the first black and first female managing editor of the journal Pediatric Radiology.

Amaka has worked in the NHS as a paediatric radiologist for 18 years and acts as an expert witness for Her Majesty’s courts in cases of suspected child abuse, having provided expert reports and/or attended court in over 500 cases.

Amaka is/has been supervisor to 19 postgraduate students and 12 BMedSci medical students, with informal supervision of numerous others. She has provided pastoral support to approximately 40 medical students over the past 11 years and in July 2020, received an email from a doctor stating that, “At all sorts of times I have and still do think back to various of your comments and advice…and wanted to let you know how valuable this has been to me over a number of years…”.

For Amaka, this is an important aspect of her role, and she is driven to mentor and inspire, especially those who (like her) identify as women and are from a minority ethnic group.
